Volvo Launches World’s First Electric Articulated Haulers in Their Class

At the ongoing Bauma trade fair, Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has unveiled the world’s first series-produced battery-electric articulated haulers in their size class: the A30 and A40.
The newly launched electric haulers boast the same off-road capabilities as their diesel counterparts, with payload capacities of 29 and 39 tons respectively. These impressive machines now rank among the largest electric vehicles in Volvo’s growing zero-emissions lineup.
“These electric haulers mark a significant step forward in our ambition to reduce carbon emissions in the construction industry,” said Mats Sköldberg, Head of Technology at Volvo CE. “They combine the unbeatable performance our customers know and love with more sustainable operation. As the world’s first battery-powered articulated haulers in this class, we are proud to lead the way by bringing our world-class electric technology into a brand-new segment.”

The machines are designed for 4 to 4.5 hours of operation under most conditions, with up to seven hours of runtime depending on usage and terrain. For more energy-intensive tasks, more frequent charging may be required. Ideal applications include downhill loading and uphill return driving, tunnel construction, quarrying, and underground operations—areas where reducing emissions is especially critical.
Charging from 20% to 80% can be achieved in about one hour using a DC fast-charging solution with a maximum capacity of 350 kW.
This launch comes 60 years after Volvo CE pioneered the world’s first articulated hauler—and just weeks after the company introduced a new generation of conventional models. Now, the tradition of innovation continues, powered by electricity.
