Volvo CE Unveils New Generation EWR150 and EWR170 Wheel Excavators

Volvo Construction Equipment rolled out the next generation of its class-leading short swing radius wheel excavators, the EWR150 and EWR170. These refreshed machines come equipped with an industry-first electrically retractable ladder for safer and easier cabin access—an innovation set to become available on all models from 2026—alongside new four-wheel steering for pinpoint maneuverability in the tightest urban environments.

Building on a heritage that began in 2016 with the EWR150 and extended in 2018 with the EWR170, the new models boast over half a meter of additional reach, increased lift capacity, a reduction of more than 0.5 m in front swing radius, and a 10 % boost in engine power on the EWR150. Combined with the class-leading rear swing radius—and the forthcoming Volvo-patented fold-away ladder—these design enhancements promise unparalleled performance on crowded job sites.

Under the hood, the EWR150 sports a new 115 kW engine that delivers nearly 10 % more power than its predecessor, matching the output of the EWR170’s 115 kW motor. Both machines benefit from a 10 % increase in swing torque, leading to faster cycle times, stronger digging forces, and smoother handling of larger attachments—ideal for heavy-duty tasks that demand both strength and precision.

Versatility is a hallmark of the new EWR models. Customers can choose boom lengths of 2 m, 2.4 m or 2.6 m on the EWR150, and 2 m, 2.5 m or 3.1 m on the EWR170. Undercarriage options include stabilisers, blades or a bare setup at both front and rear, while a 2.75 m wide axle—once exclusive to the EWR170—now gives the EWR150 extra side-lift stability. Paired with Volvo’s full line of buckets, tiltrotators and hydraulic breakers, these excavators adapt seamlessly to every application.

Designed as a true profitability partner, the EWR150 and EWR170 feature load-sensing electric hydraulics that deliver power precisely when it’s needed, cutting fuel consumption without sacrificing performance. Automatic idle and engine shutdown functions further curb unnecessary burn, and an optional undercarriage fuel tank extends time between refuels. Robust frames, grouped grease points, ground-level service access and quick-fill hydraulic oil options make daily maintenance fast and straightforward—maximizing uptime and lowering operating costs.

Inside the redesigned cabin, operators will enjoy best-in-class visibility with fewer blind spots, low noise levels and ergonomically arranged joystick controls. A 12.8-inch touchscreen consolidates media, camera feeds, climate control and machine diagnostics into one user-friendly interface. Modern creature comforts—wireless phone charging, USB ports, automatic cabin lighting and an optional air compressor for cleaning—keep crews comfortable on long shifts. The new four-way-adjustable seat offers air suspension, heating/cooling functions and two- or three-point seatbelts for a tailored driving experience.

Safety features abound: Volvo’s new Comfort Cabin ladder locks the machine when deployed to prevent unintended movement, and an array of cameras—including rear, side and the optional Smart View 360° system—ensures complete situational awareness. Powerful LED work lights, four transport tie-down points and a Lockout/Tagout system for maintenance further enhance on-site safety.
